What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a superficial fat bulging around tethered fibers through the skin. This is similar to a pin-cushion effect. Many of this is inherited and due to the way your soft tissues and skin are engineered. Strong fibers connect the skin to the underlying tissue. If these fibers are short or there is excess focal fat bulging through the rest of the skin areas that are not tethered, you will end up with a pincushion effect on the surface of the skin. Cellulite is most often seen on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and arms, but it can be located just about anywhere on the body. The type of cellulite you have will determine where it is located, along with other factors like genetics and weight loss or gain.

Genetics

Your genetics determine how your skin, soft tissue, and fat are displayed on your body. Your fat lies in between your skin and the underlying muscles. Your skin is connected to the underlying soft tissue and muscles by firm connecting fibers. The fat is dispersed between these poles of connecting fibers. Cellulite results when your fat cells bulge through the skin between skin-connecting fibers.

Weight Gain

When you gain weight, your fat cells increase in size. When the fat cells increase in size, they tend to bulge outward toward the skin for that added room. Hence, you will see more cellulite or dimpling because the fat cells have grown larger in size.

Skin Quality

Another contributing factor to pronounced cellulite is the decrease in skin quality and tone. Skin tone and quality is affected by age, sun damage, significant weight changes, and poor nutrition and lifestyle habits. The effect of decreased skin quality and tone allows fat to bulge even further. That is why cellulite becomes more prominent with age and loss of skin tone. Continue to Part 2
